Day 52 - 12th July

Got up at 5.45am to pouring rain; at least yesterday for the Twins 2nd birthday it was glorious sunshine.

Met the lovely Micala at the pier at 6.20ish so she could take some pics of me having a swim; luckily the rain had stopped by then, as watching me swim is boring enough without doing it in the rain.

Swam just once around the Pier as didn't want her to have to hang around. Sea nice and warm and like a millpond, not a ripple.

Heading around the end of the pier at about 6.30am I swam past Paul & Shoichi who were just treading water with their fishing rods (they'd already caught 2 mackerel); only in Brighton could you see that at 6.30! Gotta love this town!

Tomorrow Bob and I doing a 7am longish one. Wouldn't mind a few waves tomorrow as really need a tough swim soon.

Sunday 11 July 2010

Day 51 – 9th July 2010

Eyes still not perfect, but loads better. Feeling in good form and healthy, so ready to go. Had a bowl of porridge (yuck) and a banana; even had some water. Better effort at last.

Temperature was probably about 16 degrees today; don’t know for sure, but felt really comfortable. The sea was very calm, with a slight drag to the east. Sun shinning and already at 7am about 23 degrees in the air – gonna be a hot one today. Bob and I out again; swam Brighton Pier to the Red Buoy at the far end of the West Pier (first time I have ever gone a little past the West Pier) then back to the Brighton Pier; then through the Pier to the buoy on the other side and back again. A really good distance and took 1 hr 16 minutes.

Bob was quick today! I think if we had kept swimming for maybe another half hour he may have tired and I probably would not have done; however even at this distance he was super fast. I was probably always 30 second behind him.

Good swim though and pleased with it after a few days of. Hopefully by Monday the eyes will be back to normal and I can do some big swims as planned.

Fiona said maybe next week we can go to Dover for a 4 hour swim!

Day 50 – 8th July 2010

Eyes still swollen, but not as bad. Went to the beach, but almost didn’t! I very nearly left it till Monday as eyes not great and throat very sore. But a bigger part of me was feeling guilty about not swimming the last 2 days, even though I couldn’t anyway!

So went down and did just once around the pier to get my confidence back. Very warm water today and a nice breezy choppy sea.

BBC camera crew at the arches doing an advert for the Royal Mail on the over 50s. So I kept well away as no where near 50 yet, although with my puffy eyes I looked more like the grandfather of them all!

6th July & 7th July

Conjunctivitis so bad and now in both eyes; just can’t swim!

Day 49 – 5th July 2010

Woke up this morning with blocked nose, rough throat, headache and left eye swollen shut! At least my foot was totally fine. Nice start to the day. No way could I swim. So stayed in bed and went straight to London for a meeting at 11am.

I am not a sick person, but recently I feel as if all I’ve done is complain about this and that – it has to stop now; I’m starting to bug myself about it!

Quick meeting in London, so back in Brighton at 2.30pm.

Still felt bad and eye really puffy, but hey ho! Headed for beach and swam once around the pier. Warmish water, but roughest it’s been. Really wavy, with waves breaking out passed the pier and the waves pushing towards the marina. I told the lifeguards I was doing a lap and they were cool about it. Hard swim, about 35 mins instead of the usual 24 mins, but great workout. Was fine until got back to the arches, then really bad cramps in both legs, this time at the front shin areas. Really painful; need to ask Shep if it was lack of water before I swam again!

Eye etc no worse but no better either. So got some eye drops from Ashtons, the Chemist.

Tomorrow got 7am with Bob to do an hour and then 3pm with Shep at Falmer.

Day 48 – 2nd July 2010

Did a decent gym and swim session at Falmer last night.

This morning, randomly, my foot is bad; bad enough that I need my walking stick! Hoping it won’t last as it’s very painful but also I look stupid with a walking stick at my age! Sea looks same as last few days.

Hobbled on my stick down the beach like an old man and into the sea. The swim however was pain free, which was great. Bob and I did twice around the pier again, I was ahead going around on the first lap, although he reached the shore slightly ahead of me, but coming back we were basically kneck and kneck and I just pipped him I think. Pleased with that swim. Getting out of the sea and up the beach with my stick was interesting, but I made it!

Day 47 – 1st July 2010

6.40am waiting at Arches for Bob. We agreed to swim together at 7am today.
Not sure why, but I feel a bit apprehensive today about swimming. Not worried or anything, just butterflies. Annoying really. Might be a work thing rather than swimming as I’ve got a lot going on at the moment with possible office moves, new staff, possible new partners; a lot on my mind. Also the Starr Trust is so very busy and a lot of pressure there to keep pushing it forward. Not sure where we’re swimming today, might let Bob decide.

I decided at the end; we did twice around the pier, beach to beach. Calmish and warmish. 26 mins first lap and 27 mins back. Decent times and a nice swim; cleared my head.

Bob still faster but only just! Keeping up with him at last (no fins either); hopefully another month and he’ll be keeping up with me. Then Fiona my next target!

Day 46 – 30th June 2010

Fiona and I were going to swim Marina, Pier to Pier and back; but she texted me early to say she has twisted her ankle. The anticipation of the swim kept me fairly restless most of the night, which is something I really need to work on – it’s only a swim for goodness sake!

I had my Fusion at 5.30am and my porridge (proper oats this time) with banana at 6.00am. When I heard that Fiona couldn’t make it (6.18am) I was disappointed, but also relieved. It did annoy me that I was relieved we would not be doing the big swim; I should be mad for it by now!

Anyhow, without beating myself up further, I hit the sea at 6.40am, swam to the West Pier, then back to the Brighton Pier, then twice around the Pier and back to the beach. So a decent swim all in all; in fact my longest as a solo swim and also without my flippers. I got back to the Arches about 7.55am, so it took me about an hour and a quarter. It was very choppy out there; real slap in the face waves plus a lot of seaweed all around. Temperature was nice though, around 15c.

Day 45 – 29th June 2010

Did an 8k run last night, almost sprinted the whole thing; was good to be back out running. This morning the sea was warmer than it’s been, with a choppy feel. I swam solo and did two buoys to west pier and then back to buoy by Brighton pier; nice swim.

Met Fiona at 9.30 and went to performance foods. That was good. Have a new regime to try out. Only going to be taking supplements on long swims, but also Fiona is going to get me some maxim for those really long swims when we feed in the sea. Meanwhile I will make a huge effort to eat well every night before a swim and to at least have some cereal and water before the swim.

New fins arrived today, which is good as we are doing a 7am Marina & West Pier swim tomorrow morning.

Day 44 – 28th June 2010

Swam solo today. 3 buoys both sides of pier plus around pier each time. Water warmer at last. No special feeds, just a bowl of cereal.

Saw Fiona afterwards and she said time to change the flippers as mine might be causing the groin strain. Mine are actually surf board ones rather than swimming ones (I didn’t know!), so I’ll get new ones like hers; but only for long swims.

Day 43 – 23rd June 2010

Today the plan is pier to marina to west pier and back. About 5 miles and maybe around 3 hours. My longest to date.

My feeds were pre planned and I was up for it. However!! Asher up being sick at 4.30am, so that was a good start. I took the fusion at 7am, which was fine. However having porridge at 8.30am was really hard and I only got through half the bowl; how crap is that!

I’ve got to take the new Reflex banana shake in 10 mins, which is bothering me. Then the performance matrix at 9.40 when I leave. At least I am then done with food for a while. You would have thought at age 41 I would be over this eating nonsense! Really annoyed with myself over it. But the swim is a big one so I need to chill and get positive.

Weather beautiful, so that will certainly help. We swam, but not great. I was sluggish and slow (3hrs) and my mind was everywhere except where I needed it to be. I never made it to the West Pier though! I failed!! We swam to the Marina and back, but it took 3 hours – only took 2 hours last time. I’m sure the sea and tides were much tougher this time, but my mind and all that stupid eating just took its toll. Fiona said my feeds were daft as I should not be turning up for a big swim feeling bloated; I should know that!!! But I was only following instructions! I know that completing a Marina swim is great, but I’m really peeved at not including the West Pier; I feel really down about it.

Fiona had agreed that she will “personally” take interest in my feeds now, will meet the performance food chaps and meanwhile I should stop taking the powders until she meets them - thank goodness! I really could not have had another morning of feeds like today, it was so counter productive.

I’m going to miss my swimming now till Monday as I need a rest. Kids staying with Sharon’s parents this weekend so we are of to Dublin (Friday) (oh yes baby) and I’ll do some nice pool swims and light gym workouts whilst I’m there; gotta do something! Also will be having two glorious massages and doing lots of reading!

Day 42 – 22nd June 2010

Fabulous day! Warm weather, sea around 14c and very calm. Bob and I swam 56 mins. 3 bouys then round the pier then 3 bouys towards marina and then traced back. A really gorgeous swim.

Tomorrow 10am swim with Fiona to marina and then west pier and back. Will be longest so far.

I finished the Channel Swimming book; fantastic read, really inspiring and interesting. Sharon’s going to read it now, so will be interesting to see how she feels about the challenge once she’s read the book.

Day 41 – 21st June 2010

Monday morning once again! Taking the protein shakes is still tough, but I seem to have the energy, so I guess I need to stick with it until I can replace them with real food.

Bob and I swam about 1.5 miles - all 3 buoys then round the pier, then to the next 2 buoys and then back. The sea was calm, but must be back to around 11c. Also really strong current. A real battle to get to the bouys, but a fly on the way back. Took 46 mins.

Now at office, still a bit cold and unusually tired. Asher was restless last night, plus a 5.30am drink; must be the reason! Also my groin still not 100% from marina swim, which is an annoyance. I think a groin strain may be something that will stay with me on my swims, so I need to probably just grit my teeth and ignore it; no problem.

Day 40 – 18th June 2010

Yesterday I did the Marina and then Falmer in the evening; tired and sore today. But kids all slept through, crones not hurting and foot OK – life aint so bad!

Did a simple once around the pier with Bob and Midgy. Sea was cold again, but mostly calm.

I did however go “ without “ flippers for the first time ever. It was weird as they speed me up and also act as comfort blankets; however it was a decent swim all the same and whenever possible no more flippers.

Day 39 – 17th June 2010

Today is the long swim to the Marina, therefore, no morning swim! I can’t believe I am attempting the Marina and back; it was only a few weeks ago I thought it impossible! We shall see.

I met Fiona at midday at the Arches. The weather is nice, warm and bright. The sea however was colder than yesterday; what’s that all about! In preparation for the swim I took my three drinks, plus porridge and a banana; feel a little too full up (didn’t tell her!) However Fiona told me I didn’t drink enough water; I should have listened!!

We swam from the groin, under the pier (keeping close to the waters edge) and then all the way through to the Marina. We touched the Marina wall, getting odd looks from the fisherman, and then turned around and swam back, touching the groin again; a full out and back. Total distance circa 4 miles and we did it in just under 2 hours; not bad at all; in fact flipping amazing.

My problem however was that before we reached the Marina I developed bad cramp in both my legs in the calf areas. This lasted all the way back, and in fact now 2 hours later I am still hurting from the cramp. The rest of me was fine; I felt strong and focused most of the whole swim. When I told Fiona about the cramp she said she would not have guessed and that I did amazingly well to swim through it; however she said that the cramp was a direct result of me not drinking enough water. I think it’s time I started to learn that lesson!!! The cramp really almost stopped me completing the swim; I do not want that to happen again.

I’m going to still go to Falmer tonight and just do some gentle lengths to stretch out and practice my breathing, then a short time in the steam room. Then tomorrow I’ll go in the morning as usual, but just once round the pier in a sprint. Yey me on that swim.

Day 38 – 16th June 2010

Still not loving the power drinks, especially the 5.30am and 6.30 am ones! However they seem to be working.

This morning I swam solo. Around all 3 buoys, then around the pier to the far buoy and to the beach (marina side) then tracing my way back around the pier taking in all buoys again. A good strong swim.

Temperature still not bad, but cooler than yesterday. Also wind chill was up so I was cold when I got back and even had the shivers after my shower for about half an hour; ages since that happened.

Sea was fairly calm again, but with a little choppy around the pier.

Day 37 – 15th June 2010

Having had 4 days off from the sea, I am ready for a swim, really feel I need it. Back to protein shakes as well, but again happy to restart. Good time at Centre Parcs, did a lot of activity and managed to squeeze in an hours run, but basically not really over worked.

A nice swim today, although my goggles kept leaking which stopped me doing a long one (but that may be an excuse; I can’t decide!). Water a fraction choppy as was windy, but dry, bright, warm and the sea around 14.5c, which I found very warm. Apparently the channel is around this temperature usually.

Just swam once around the pier to ease back in.

Day 36 – 10th June 2010

No sea today as doing a 2 hour swim at Falmer with Mark after work.

Then off to Centre Parcs with the Palmers for a few days; really looking forward to the break and spending time with good friends and the kids.

Day 35 – 9th June 2010

This morning I started my Sports Supplements. At 5.30am I took my first supplement shake, then at 6.30am my second one. This was not particularly joyous! However it has to be said that for me it is doable, whilst eating food at these times would simply not be possible. So ultimately whilst I would rather not take these, it is the better of two evils!

I swam on my own today as I was a little early and didn’t want to wait; also it is nice occasionally to swim on my own. I swam twice around the Pier (beach to beach) and then carried on and went to the 3 buoys as well. Afterwards I still felt energised. I guess it has to be the supplements I took! If they work (which it seems they do) then regardless of whether I like them or not I MUST keep taking them.

Day 34 – 8th June 2010

Raining and fairly gloomy. The sea looks like it’s moving around a bit, a lot like yesterday, just with the rain added. I had a granola yogurt thing this morning. I really am starting to wish that I found eating (especially first thing) a lot easier! I swam with Bob and Midge today.

For a change we swam West towards the west pier. We went buoy to buoy. We got to the buoy passed the Brighton Centre and then turned back. We agreed to meet at the buoy next to the Brighton pier, but got separated on the way back by the rough seas. Midge swam back sooner, and then Bob did. I wanted to finish the swim, so carried on to the last buoy. The tides were against us coming back so it was a tough swim, but I was really pleased I completed it.

I started reading Swimming The English Channel by Marcia Cleveland , a fantastic read, really enjoying it.

I also visited the Performance Foods on Church Road and got my first supplements and an eating plan. I think these guys are really going to help me. Although it does still feel as if I am just playing on the eating front rather than taking it as seriously as I need to.

Day 33 – 7th June 2010

No swimming this weekend as we moved from Hill Drive into Dyke Road as the Hill Drive build starts today. No swimming or running, but a ton of exercise with the move!

Sitting in the car at 6.45am, a little too early. An old Chinese man is running passed; I see him most mornings, he’s funny because he is normally dresses in long trousers and flowery shirt and does a sort of cross country ski movement. Fair go to him though as he looks to be in his 100’s and he runs every morning.

Kids all slept OK last night, but my chrones kept me awake, always something! So I’m a little tired today and can’t really be bothered, but I’m here so may as well swim. After an amazing weekend weather, it looks as though it’s about to chuck it down. The sea looks like a swell and moving towards the East; not rough, but certainly not calm. My stomach still hurting! I had a Sarah Worn pill thing and ate a kiddie’s pancake, better than nothing. Although really could do with some water (without salt and muck!). No more putting it off I guess!

It was very choppy out there, first impressions with the sea are generally wrong! I swam around the pier with Bob and Shoichi. We went to the buoy, then under and around as the tide was pulling. From the end of the pier to the helter skelter it seemed as if I wasn’t moving. Yoshi seemed to be so smooth with his swimming it made me feel clumsy.

There I was thinking of it as a battle when I spot Leo and old David swimming out past the pier carrying bamboo fishing rods! It’s all about perspective I guess! David is certainly the oldest in the club and he is out in the sea every day around the pier and so often with a fishing rod in tow; people are truly astonishing sometimes.

My tummy hurt throughout which was annoying and I think it drained me a little.

Tomorrow I aim to be a lot stronger!!

Day 32 – 4th June 2010

Builders start knocking down our house on Monday so house moving today to Dyke Road! I hate moving house Yuk!!

Still wanted to have my swim so I went a bit earlier. Swam on my own (others in club in sea, so not totally on own). I did twice around the Pier (same as yesterday), but as on my own I felt no speed pressure. Coming back around the pier I swam into Bob, Midge and about 4 others, which was funny as I never expected that. They continued under the pier as I continued back around the pier.

Sea was calm again, but with little slappy waves and a decent tide back to shore.

Twice around the pier two days in a row - not bad going!

Day 31 – 3rd June 2010

Another very calm day in the sea.

Bob and I swam around the pier, got out on the beach marina side, got back in and swam back around to the beach our side - 2 whole complete laps, beach to beach. Not bad for day 31!! Took 45 mins, temperature about 12 degrees.

Swimming club funny as battle going on in Arches about decor. Some swimmers taking down stuff put up by other swimmers, so battle lines drawn. No matter what the club, Human nature is the same everywhere.

Day 30 – 2nd June2010

Day 30? that came about quickly.

The sea was calm and zero movement. Was about 11 degrees today; feeling warmer now. Bob and I went “twice” around the Pier and to the four buoys; big swim. I then met Fiona for coffee and she gave me her own training plans and food sheets, she is so great.

Next week I must start my 3 hour swim. Also next April (2011) I might have to do a 4 day Malta trip to a swimming camp; where they plan the food, do the 6 hour adjudicated swim etc. Fiona said it was fantastic but VERY tough. Wonder what Sharon will say to me going away to Malta without her. She can come of course, but she’ll have to swim with me!!

Day 29 – 1st June 2010

Did not want to get up this morning! From 5.45am until 6.30am I wrestled with my conscience about not going!

I went of course!

Going round the Pier, near the top, Leo swam by and grabbed my leg making me jump (if one can jump in the sea!). Then he swam off at some incredible speed!

Coming back around the buoy I was level with Bob. For some reason He and I started an unofficial race back to shore. It was neck and neck all the way. Usually I would let the person carry on and I would hold back, but this time I just kept fighting! I came in “just” in front of him. I was really pleased I kept going; it shows I can do it. Pretty soon I am going to lose the flippers on these swims and see what happens. Ready for the day now!

Seeing Sarah Worne (Homeopath) today, am going to take her seriously this time I think.

Day 28 - 28th May 2010

No rain today, which was good. However, sea very choppy indeed and pulling hard East again.

There is going to be a flotilla of boats heading to France at 8.30 ish so the club are going later so they can swim to see them. I have to be in London today at 10am, which is a pity as it meant I had to swim solo at 7.15am; shame as would have been nice.

Having had Jesse up until midnight, then joined by Mia for an hour and then Asher in our room at 3am meant I was a tad tired, as such I almost didn’t swim; especially when trudging down the beach on my own with rough seas ahead. Pleased with myself that I went in though. Didn’t do pier, instead did a power swim around the 3 buoys. All alone, but not a problem.

Really need to do a long swim soon. Also need to urgently start an eating plan and also some core training. I did do 7 swims this week, so at weekend I will do a gym and a run. Bring it on!

Day 27 – 27th May 2010

Looks like it’s not singing in the rain today, it’s swimming in the rain and fairly hard too. Another new one for me. The sea itself looks calm, but that can be deceptive of course!

Bob and Midge did a little swim to the buoys so I went around the Pier on my own. A lot of extremely cold patches catching you out which is weird. Also a very strong pull to the East (marina), which made it very hard to keep a line and to head to shore, good exercise though.

It will be interesting to be in the sea when it’s really got the hump!!

Day 26 – 26th May 2010

The weather has changed! Very windy today and a lot colder in the air.

The sea was definitely colder and was wavy; not big waves, but constant and slappy in the face ones. As we swam to the Pier it was splashy and pulling us back to the shore, but as we swam around the Pier it was very windy and at times felt like we were not moving. Going back under the Pier it was a real push as the waves seemed to be going both ways, but when we came out the West Pier side it became a bit easier. Even though it was a hard swim it was enjoyable because of the conditions.

Maybe having a bowl of cereal and a banana this morning helped a little! Who knows!

Day 25 – 25th May 2010

Here we are again!

Still nice out, bit cooler than yesterday. Sea looks calm again, but not as calm as yesterday, looks to be dragging west as well towards the marina. Gotta try the new superman “arms out stroke” today.

Decent swim, bit choppier today, but still calm. Bob, Midge and Me around the Pier. Wasn’t easy to do everything Shep taught me, but I did definitely stretch with each stroke. I was on the beach waiting for Bob and Midge for around a minute when I got back, so I was definitely much faster. Still cheekily ignoring the fact I was wearing flippers and they weren’t though!!

Day 24 – 24th May 2010

Twins up and down till about midnight and then Asher in our room from about 2am; so very tired this morning, really can’t be bothered! Hey ho, got to do it anyway, so in car, parked at beach. Beautiful day; 16 degrees in air and was 24 yesterday, so sea might be warmer? We shall see. Also swimming with Shep at 12.30 at Falmer today; double bubble.

Did my Pier swim in good time. Lost Bob as he went one way and me the other! It was probably the calmest it’s been, not even a ripple. I was surprised by how cold it was though. It’s definitely warmer than when I started, but despite the very warm air it was still surprisingly cold.

Now at work drinking hot coffee and waiting for 12.30 and my next swim!

Had solo lesson with Shep. Really good, learned so much. Breathed both sides for a change (not easy as I only ever breathe to my left) and went from 33 strokes per length to 28, that’s 5 strokes less per length. Really incredible how a simply change to my stroke can save so much energy! Keep the wrist limp going over, stretch out with each arm in a superman stance and then hard pull through the water. Need more one to one lessons urgently if I am ever going to be a swimmer.

Day 23 – 22nd May 2010 (Saturday)

I’ve a 7.15am meeting at Juice breakfast meetings to talk about the Trust with Mel & Micala.

As there’s no one at BSC who swims at 6am it means I can’t swim in the sea.
Instead I’ll use my pool. It’s gonna be very weird going from under 10 degrees to over 30 degrees! I’m not sure how useful it will be, but it is swimming and is tough so I figure it’s worth getting up at 6am for; it’ll stop me feeling guilty for not swimming at the least!

Just did 30 minutes, but didn’t love it, much prefer the sea. After yesterday I was really tired and feeling the ache, so that was plenty!

Having not eaten at all yesterday day or night I should have had breakfast, but here we go again, 11.am at work and only now about to have some fruit. I’ve got to stop this nonsense!

Day 22 – 21st May 2010

Got a 9.30am London meeting today, so am doing a 6.30am swim with the early boys. Got a feeling I’m gonna be the slow Joe again!

Very calm sea, but very foggy indeed, very! We couldn’t see more than a few yards ahead. We had to hug the pier to follow it around. We stopped at the end of the pier to chat, which was really nice; three really nice guys. Everyone at the Arches are so friendly, a real family. The atmosphere in the fog made it feel like an episode of Scoobydoo doo! It took 13 minutes to get to the end and then 11 minutes to get back. We all swam at the same pace, which was really good and quite surprising for me, 24 minutes, including a quick chat; that’s the ticket.

Fiona and Angus are swimming to the Marina and back today. She reckons 2 hours!! Wow that’s a swim; can’t believe I’ll get that far this year.

I’m in the pool tonight with Shep at Falmer, so 2 swims today. We did an hour at Falmer from 7.30 pm- 8.30 pm. It was a group session, about 12 people. Lots of different swimming techniques and swam well over 50 lengths. I did ok, but wished I had eaten something! Got home after 9.30, so ended up not eating today apart from an apple in London at about 11am.

Day 21 – 20th May 2010

Another clear day and sea looking seriously calm. Tummy feeling a little uncomfortable again but not so bad I need to stop, foot totally 100% fine; swimming in the sea seems to help both conditions somehow.

Good swim; Fiona, Bob and Me did the same swim as yesterday. All good.

Day 20 – 19th May 2010

Foot hurting, causing me to limp, but not so bad I need my stick. Tummy OK though, so one out of two aint bad!

Bob and I did the same swim as yesterday; pretty much the same experience as yesterday all around; including the yucky fishy water!

Not shivering at all any more; 10 degrees seems to be my best temperature to date.

Day 19 – 18th May 2010

Sea looking VERY calm and air temp about 10deg, so not uninviting it seems. In car, 7am, just listened to Pixie Lott New York song, very cool song and feeling nice and calm, how pleasant!

Bob and I went around 5 buoys and the pier and then retraced our steps; it was over a 1 mile ½ and took around 36 minutes. Amazing how we are doing more and more and I can keep up. Really pleased.

Very salty water today (sounds weird, but true) and very fishy, yuck! Need a strong tasting coffee. Might even try to eat something at the office – wow!!

Day 18 – 17th May 2010

Early morning interview on juice fm at 8am today for the Starr Trust to announce an event we are holding at Marshas Loft. So did a quick buoy to beach swim at 7am. Sea calm as glass and around 10degrees, shame I didn’t have longer.

Shep met with me today at Seico. We have started the training plan at last, so really excited by that. We have put in some one to one pool times and some group pool times. Food is still a MAJOR problem for me as I just don’t want to eat or drink and that it’s going to stop me! Need to take that seriously now.

Day 17th – 15th May 2010 (Saturday)

Great night last night. For my birthday Mum paid for a night away for Sharon and me; much needed. 3 Kiddies divided between Tracey and Mum, so that was job done. We had a fantastic dinner and then stayed over at South Lodge. Sharon has gone off to do a wedding with John, Kids still with Mum & Tracey. So decided to join the weekend10.30s for a dip in the sea!

Bit breezy, but bright and the air warm. Just chatted to one of the weekday swimmers who had a friend with him. They’ve just been in. His friend, who said he swims every day in a pool, said he had to come back in after a couple of hundred yards as he couldn’t breathe because of the cold. Sounds like my first day; a lifetime ago.

Fiona met me at 11am and told me that Angus, Her and Me are swimming Pier to Pier! She didn’t tell me last night as she said she didn’t want to worry me! That was very daunting to hear as that is a lonnnnnng way.

The sea was relatively warm at 10 degrees; you could really notice it was warmer. It was however very tidal and the waves were being extremely busy!

It was the longest and hardest swim I have done. Getting to the West Pier was not too hard, but going back was really tough. When I got back to around the Brighton Centre I felt stuck. I didn’t seem to be moving forward. I had to swim outwards to beat the tide and that did the job. It was hard on the mind a few times, but I did it!

When we got back Angus was already showered and changed, of course. Fiona is great, she’s quicker than anyone, but just waits for me. What a lady she is.
Need to sort out eating and drinking as I’m just not bothering. I think if I had eaten and drunk something properly before the swim it would have been a lot easier on me.

Another milestone, another experience, another memorable day.

Day 16 – 14th May 2010

Day 16 and still here (of course). Not exactly excited though, slight pain in my right foot (my rheumatism playing up) and stomach tight as had bad crones during the night; keeping me awake pretty might the whole night – think I slept about an hour in total. But it is what it is.

Weather ok, sea a little wavy but not badly. Tied looks out though which is a pain as it means walking in a distance.

Water cold again, around 8 degrees. This morning Bob and I only, Fiona going with others a bit later.

Waves and tide rather strong. We swam to the buoy and then around the pier. Quite a tough swim today because of the waves and tide, but we got round. Pretty much got around together .

Day 15 – 13th May 2010

7.15am and yesterday is behind me.

We had a good swim today. Still cold at 8.5 degrees, but sea very calm.

Fiona, Bob and I swam around the pier. Bob headed back to shore, but Fiona and I swam onto the next buoy and then the one after and then back to shore. It basically was the same distance as twice around the pier; the longest I have so far done. I think it took about 40 minutes, which for me is really quick. Feeling good and back on target.

Day 14 – 12th May 2010

Went in on my own (shouldn’t I know, but hey ho), swam about a minute and came out – how rubbish is that! Feeling really annoyed with myself.

Had late birthday dinner, which a little rich for my stomach and also was already as tired as the Twins were up for most of the night; I think we got to sleep about 3am! Under the Pier to 15 minutes again with my crones, must have looked bad as even my drunk friend didn’t say hello!

But 1 minute in the sea, crap! All the above is just excuses that I simply can’t afford. Now of course I feel guilty and my day is set up to be an unenjoyable one – bugger!

Day 13 – 11th May 2010

My birthday today, grand old age of 41 and I’m heading off to the beach for my swim, who would have believed that a year ago!

Looks nice from the bedroom window, bright sky and sunny and it’s only 6.30am. The sea however may be choppy and definitely will be cold; I’ll know for sure in 45 minutes.

Air temp cold, only 4 degrees. Sea looks calm, but you can see there is a drag on the water.

My foots been hurting about 4 days and my stomach is still rather cronesy, but it’s not stopping me swimming, however might have to speak with Homeopath about remedies, especially for my crones as I am getting quite a few moments and they are energy sapping, which I simply can’t afford in my new life as an Olympic swimmer (yeh right!!). Off now to the arches to start the day.

Wow that was a cold one! Colder than yesterday by some way; it’s supposed to be getting warmer!! Just Fiona and Me this morning, which was actually a nice change. She timed me; 25.5 minutes around! My quickest to date - yes me. She probably does it in 15!

Day 12 – 10th May 2010

6.45am. Sea calm, little colder though than yesterday, about time it warmed up I think.

Swam fast today, actually was quicker than Bob!! He probably was slower than usual, however, I got back before him and that is quite major for me. Of course I had flippers on and he didn’t, but still fair is fair, I am only on day 12 and he is on day million something! He’s a great support to me, not sure I would be this far ahead if not for Fiona and him.

At work now and still shivering a little 8.20am!

Mark came at midday to talk training. We didn’t really plan much though which is a shame as he only had a short time; Fiona couldn’t make it as she was caught up somewhere.

Day 11 – 9th May 2010 (Sunday)

I decided to swim today as I missed Thursday; I must be hooked, I really must be. Cold again of course, but apparently 8.5 degrees, so slightly warmer, although feels the same to me.

I met someone called Tony or maybe Tom today? He swam the channel 2 years ago. He was on course for a fast one, but like Fiona he got a changing tide the other end and completed it eventually in 17 hrs. Amazing to think he could keep going that long. Fiona took 20 hours and swam almost 40 miles – she is a goddess!

Calm sea again today; I keep getting calm seas; maybe Dad is up there keeping the tap turned low for me; thanks mate?

Another first today, I did not use my swimming gloves. My hands were naturally cold at first, but I definitely prefer no gloves – they are now gone forever as far as I am concerned. It made the swim easier for me, but also it meant I could easily take of my flippers at the end and walk out the sea, instead of clumsily falling and crawling, tearing at my gloves and yanking my flippers in annoyance. Definitely no more gloves for me; I now enter the stage of gracefully leaving the sea James Bond style rather than Lee Evans style – yey!

Tomorrow after my morning swim, Shep and Fiona are coming to Seico to start my training plan. That’s a very exciting next step.

Day 10 – 7th May 2010

After missing swimming yesterday I was nearly looking forward to today’s swim. Does that mean I’m getting hooked on it already?

I almost didn’t do it though as when I was walking to the arches I got really painful crones pains in my stomach, the crippling ones I get sometimes. It only lasted about 15 minutes but it was really breath taking and extremely energy sapping. However, I got myself together (after sitting on the floor under the pier in a ball for quarter of an hour- luckily no one saw me apart from a drunk who thought I was someone else – almost funny that!). Once I was in the sea a third around the pier I was back on form. I think today was my quickest yet and also I did the whole swim without stopping, not even for a second. I think it took about 26 minutes.

Temperature similar, maybe a little warmer at 7 degrees, but recovery after was a lot quicker; I only shivered for about 10 minutes and my crone’s pain was completely gone.

6th May 2010

IPA work conference, staying over in Watford!

I would actually prefer swimming in gale force waves than attending a financial services conference; in fact swimming with jaws even sounds attractive!

As I couldn’t swim today, checked into the Hotel, found a park around the corner and ran around it 18 times – a total of 13.6k in an hour and 11 minutes. Then went to the Hotel gym and did 40 minutes on weights. Looking ion the mirror I can see a change to my physic, but only a little. Bob has a real swimmers shape, broad shoulders and tailored in at the waist; be nice to see that happening in time!

Day 9 – 5th May 2010

7am. From the looks of it, it looks like yesterday; cold in the air, but a calm sea. The suns not out today though. I can see 3 people going around the pier already, must have started 6.30. Me next!

It was cold again, just Bob and me once again, what a top bloke. I think this was our quickest, we didn’t stop today, swam constantly. But boy did my face hurt when I first went in the water.

Strangely though I warmed up very quickly today, maybe only 20 minutes of shaking today, so that’s a good sign.

Day 8 – 4th May 2010

7am and here again. I’m not sure if I like it yet really, but I don’t hate it. In the car, parked at the Pier and the sea looks very calm and the sky is very blue, although fairly cold in the air, about 5 degrees. Time to go for it; packed a jumper today as rather bored of shivering for an hour afterwards!

Went around pier today just with Bob, such a top bloke and a fast swimmer. Really cold today, although very calm and the sun simply shining all the way around. Nice swim to be honest and enjoyed it in my usual “must be mad” way. Only took us 28 minutes to do, which was fast for me, but probably slow for Bob!

Gonna grab a 10k run after work as I need to prove to myself I can be fast at something!

Day 7 – 3rd May 2010

10.15am swim today. Nice to have a lie in, but in truth I think I prefer an earlier start as there is less anticipation and less time to consider the madness of sea swimming!

Fiona, Midge and I swam the pier. It was calm, but raining (although only spitting really). Every now and then the sun came out and hit us, which was glorious.

I realised today that as a swimmer I am a really a Sunday driver and need to learn how to pick up the speed. I know that Bob & Fiona are swimmers of 20 years standing and Midge is a long distance athlete, but I have 15 years on Bob & Fiona! I swam hard and fast, but Fiona & Bob kept having to stop and wait for me; they should have brought a book with them to kill the time! Midge was not as quick as them, but boy she’s a good and strong swimmer and made me feel as if I was treading water. Hey ho!

Day 6 – Saturday 1st May 2010

Meeting Mark and Fiona today, mid morning, my first meeting with Mark. He swam the channel in the 1980’s, a B.I.G guy.

The 3 kids are with Roger at Irit, so Sharon is with me to meet Mark and to take some photos of me swimming in my Speedos! Nice! Still really annoyed about goggles, have ordered new ones for delivery next week, but meanwhile have had to buy a cheap £6 pair! Hope they work!

We swam around the pier; it was extremely choppy, but I did it with relative ease. The £6 goggles were seemingly OK. I’ll still get some better ones, but these can stay in my bag as spares just in case.

After the swim Mark told me about the challenges I face and he explained the areas we need to work on with my swimming technique and my eating! However, he said my mental ability will get me through to a large extent and he felt that as I can clearly handle the cold and as I have come on so quickly in my first week that he thinks I can do it. Very nice to hear that.

Day 5 – 30th April 2010

Day 5, can’t believe it’s a whole week now.

Yesterday the air was warm and the sea was calmer than a calm thing. What a difference a day makes!

Today the air temperature has dropped and the sea is very choppy. The tide was out which was a pain as it meant we had to walk in a distance to get into swimming depth. The waves were crashing over us and the tide dragging towards the Pier. The swim however, ever though very choppy and wavy, was very exciting. I think I actually enjoyed it as much, if not more than yesterday. I certainly took down more water, which was not nice, but the swim was exciting. The whole swim around the Pier (second time now, almost a regular!) took about 30 minutes; which was a lot quicker than yesterday.

What I should have done was follow Bob on the way back. He headed away from the pier at an angle, whilst I headed straight back. He ended up on the beach very nicely, I ended up in the shingle and cut both my legs (I look like I have been whipped on both my legs with lash marks) and I lost my brand new goggles – what an idiot! Tomorrow I shall be following the line!
Mind you how fast is he! Fiona is amazing, she swims at about 500 miles an hour; Bob follows at about 300 miles an hour and then there is me; Sunday driver doing about -1 mile an hour!

Hey ho; still I got around the Pier again, damaged and no goggles, but around it I went!

Day 4 – 29th April 2010

Sitting in my car near the Brighton Pier; 6.50am. Sea very calm and low tide. Can see a man on the beach with a metal detector, will he find sunken treasure on the beach today, mmm who knows what is lurking there?

Here we go, no point putting it off.

Fiona, Bob and Midge (really nice girl from the club and another distance athlete) and Moi!
We swam round the pier! Amazing thing to do on day 4, especially as two days ago it was not even a consideration for me.

Amazing. Can’t believe on day 4, only 4 days ever and I swam around the Brighton pier! The sun was on us just as we rounded to the end, it was astonishing. To see the pier from the end with just 4 of us and in the sun is something I’ll never forget. The whole swim only took about 40 minutes. What an amazing achievement.

Really feel I can do this challenge.

Day 3 – 28th April 2010

Despite yesterday, which bugged me all through the night into the weee hours, I have come back for more.

A guy I met a few months back is a member of the Brighton Swimming Club, Bob Bicknall, really top guy. He’s been swimming for years (probably most of my life) and for 50 something he’s in incredible shape. Fiona not here today so Bob is kindly swimming with me as I am not allowed to go out on my own yet; quite right!

Temperature still the same, fewer than 7 degrees. Small waves, quite slappy on the head. However we did swim further today and even went under the pier and then back through the pier and back to shore. That was a neat experience.

I used new flippers and a swimming hat for the first time and other goggles. The goggles were better but still crap. New goggles hopefully come today from the internet. I actually really enjoyed it! Actually felt I understood why they do it! Bob told me to relax if I got into a panic; he said just lie on your back and float it out, or let yourself drift a bit to shore or swim to the pier and climb up the stairs; either way you can get out. As soon as he said that it made perfect sense and the fear went away; nice!

I met Angus briefly. He’s swimming channel this august. He’s been training since 2007 (a lot longer than I’ve got), but like me he was a non swimmer. Brave man!

I arranged to meet Mark Shepherd, Fiona’s swimming trainer this Saturday, to swim and plan training. Now it really begins!

Good day today; feeling quite happy about it.

After work at 5pm I did a 5.4k run in 31mins around hove park up King George and home. That’ll do!

Day 2 – 27th April 2010

Day 2 and I came back; so Channel Swim here I come!

Blimey it was cold again; easily as cold as yesterday, if not colder. Fiona and I swam to the silver ball and back, which is maybe 25% along the Brighton Pier; seemed a long long way from the shore.

Whilst was extreme cold, the sea was very calm, not much movement at all. I got to the ball ok, but when I turned to come back it was really hard; I am not yet a swimmer! My goggles steamed up completely and I couldn’t see a thing. I got a bit panicky; which is a very new experience for me.

7.45am and sitting in car now, I am shaking a little, maybe a bit cold and a bit panicky still. I urgently need sea goggles rather than the pool goggles I had and I must learn to swim! The cold, whilst less than 7 degrees and making me shiver, is not a problem. My lack of experience to get out of a problem in the sea did unnerve me; I need to deal with that right now. Need to remain calm, anything else is not acceptable.

Two people swam twice around the pier, beach to beach to beach! How the hell do you do that, even once seems impossible today! The channel just got harder!

Day 1 – 26th April 2010

My first day ever into the sea as a “swimmer” rather than a paddler. What makes me think I can swim in the sea in April, let alone swim the English Channel? Am I so conceited that I think I can achieve anything? Maybe I am! But then again I could follow the saying “if you believe you can or if you believe you can’t, either way you are right” – so here I go.

7.00am and I met Fiona Southwell (Channel Swimmer – amazing lady) on the beach outside the Brighton Swimming Club Arch, just next to the Brighton Pier. I’m extremely nervous; firstly about swimming this morning, but secondly about emerging from the Arches in my Speedos looking rather pale, not muscled and being a non swimmer – not one for the photo album I think!
We went in for exactly 12 minutes, which apparently was good as Fiona said 2 minutes would be enough on my first day, as it’s less than 7 degrees. The waves were as tall as me and “COLD”!

I had to walk in backwards as the waves were high and for the first time since I was in Egypt 4 years ago in 50 degrees I found myself unable to breath! It seems extreme heat and extreme cold both take your breath away! After about 2 minutes I could breathe properly, but boy it was cold. Other swimmers went in, but most came out before us and a few had on full body costumes.

We swam to the groin and back, which seemed miles away, but in reality, was only a few meters!

For the first time in my life I realised the sea really needs to taste like hot coffee; not sure even I can pull that one off!

After swim I had a shower in the Arches and then proceeded to shiver uncontrollably for about an hour! Apparently in this temperature it’s not unusual to shiver for quite some time. I also found it a little hard to speak clearly; which apparently is very mild hypothermia. Interesting stuff!!

What a pleasant experience today wasn’t!
